Project Start Year: 2024
This project will support climate adaptation by initiating the realignment of the existing drain and coastal stopbank within the Seadown drain scheme north of Washdyke Lagoon/Waitarakao. The current infrastructure provides flood protection to Timaru township, the wastewater treatment plant, a large industrial area, roading infrastructure and private farmland that are faced with an increased risk of coastal inundation and freshwater flooding.
Benefits, Adaptation and Resilience
Improving flood resilience in this area means homes, businesses and critical infrastructure (roads, railways, power lines) in this area are better protected from the effects of climate change.
Collaboration
Environment Canterbury is working in collaboration with Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua, Timaru District Council, and Department of Conservation. This project is co-funded by MBIE-Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit. The Government funds up to 60 per cent of the project costs and Environment Canterbury funds the rest.
