Project Start Year: 2024
This project aims to enhance flood resilience across the region by adapting critical and aged flood protection infrastructure including stopbanks, culverts, weirs etc. Work includes investigations, monitoring, capital upgrades and potential fish passage enhancements. Indicative locations of various structures include Kaiapoi, Cam, Waimakariri, Orāri, and Lower Hinds rivers.

These projects will upgrade flood protection structures across the region to enhance flood resilience for Canterbury communities from future flood events.
Collaboration
Environment Canterbury is working in collaboration with local Rūnanga, district councils and infrastructure owners to align activity and minimise disruption to the community. This project is co-funded by MBIE-Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit. The Government funds up to 60 per cent of the project costs and Environment Canterbury funds the rest.
