Resilient River Communities

National Flood Resilience Investment Prioritisation Platform (FRIPP)

Region:
Council:
All regional councils and unitary authorities

Project Start Year: 2026

This nationwide project is aimed at developing a platform that contains key information needed to assess the benefit provided by proposed river scheme capital work across the country. Vulnerability and risk will be factored in. The platform will apply a consistent approach to asset data and use clear definitions of flood risk and vulnerability to provide easily accessible visual data at a national scale.

Benefits

The platform will process this information and assign a benefit cost ratio (BCR) that can be used to prioritise investment consistently.

The intention is that this platform will assist decision making by central government on investment in flood resilience across the country. Data across several parameters will be included, e.g., safety, economic benefit, population, etc, with the ability to influence these weightings depending on government direction at the time.

Collaboration

This project has been co-funded through the Regional Investment Fund (RIF) administered by Kānoa.

The works are delivered by a national team of staff from various councils working in collaboration with Te Uru Kahika.

Engagement with various government agencies and interested parties is also an important part of this work.

The National Flood Resilience Investment Prioritisation Platform (FRIPP) brings nationwide information together onto a single, accessible platform. It provides a clear view of benefits and supports informed prioritisation and investment in critical flood resilience infrastructure across New Zealand.
