Project Start Year: 2025
The Kaitangata Floodbank Reconstruction project is designed to restore and strengthen the existing floodbank along the Kaitangata Contour Channel (Drain 222) on the true left bank between Torquay and Berry Street. This floodbank protects the township of Kaitangata from flooding, but events in 2022 and 2024 caused damage, including erosion and scour, reducing its effectiveness.
The project rebuilds the floodbank to its original design level, improving stability and ensuring it can manage high flows. These works are essential to maintain the Lower Clutha Flood Protection and Drainage Scheme’s performance and keep the township and surrounding farmland safe.
Benefits
The project protects around 1,250 people, more than 480 homes, 9,500 hectares of farmland, key roads and bridges, schools, rail networks, and essential infrastructure. By restoring the floodbank, the project reduces the risk of flooding, safeguards property, and supports public safety.
Adaptation
Reconstructing the floodbank strengthens its capacity to manage high flows and respond to extreme weather events, helping the township cope with climate change and future flood risk.
Resilience
The improved floodbank increases the long-term resilience of Kaitangata and the surrounding area by preventing overtopping, reducing erosion, and ensuring reliable protection for people, homes, and local infrastructure.
Collaboration
This project has been co-funded through the Regional Investment Fund (RIF) and Otago Regional Council
The project draws on partnerships with local suppliers, councils and funding partners and has an experienced project management team.
Local expertise continues to be prioritised.
By rebuilding the Kaitangata floodbank, the project ensures the township remains protected, resilient, and better prepared for future flood events, supporting the safety and well-being of the community.
