Riverbank Road Flood Risk Mitigation

Region:
Council:
Otago Regional Council

Project Start Year: 2026

The Riverbank Road Flood Risk Mitigation project involves sediment removal and bank repairs to improve flow capacity of the Clutha River (Matau branch).

The Riverbank Road Flood Risk Mitigation project strengthens and realigns the existing floodbank along the true right bank of the Clutha River Matau branch, about 500 metres north of the Renton Road junction. Ongoing scour has caused slumping on the berm and increased pressure on the floodbank, threatening both the road and surrounding farmland.

The project involves realigning the floodbank further from the river’s edge, giving the river more room to flow safely. These works reduce flood risk, protect Riverbank Road and nearby infrastructure, and supports the effective operation of the Lower Clutha Flood Protection and Drainage Scheme.

Benefits

The project protects around 1,250 people, more than 480 homes, 9,500 hectares of farmland, roads, bridges, and rail networks. By addressing the cause of erosion and strengthening the floodbank, the project reduces the risk of flooding, protects property, and supports public safety.

Adaptation

Creating more space for the river ensures the floodbank can cope with future high flows and extreme weather, helping the community adapt to changing flood conditions and climate impacts.

Resilience

The improved floodbank increases long-term resilience for the Inch Clutha area, preventing further erosion and protecting people, homes, and farmland from flood damage.

Collaboration

This project has been co-funded through the Regional Investment Fund (RIF) and Otago Regional Council

The project builds on partnerships with local councils, funding partners, and regional suppliers, using expertise from previous relevant works to deliver effective, locally supported solutions.

By reducing pressure on the floodbank and realigning it safely, the project ensures Riverbank Road and the surrounding community remain protected, resilient, and prepared for future flood events.
