Project Start Year: 2024
Franz Josef Waiho River Flood Protection Scheme Upgrade (Stage 2 South Bank and North Bank Havill’s Wall Extension) involves strengthening of the existing Rubbish Dump and Milton & Others stopbanks to a 1% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP), and an extension of the existing Havill’s Wall stopbank to the same level of service.
Benefits, Adaptation and Resilience
The level of service is to ‘hold the line’ for 10 years, providing protection to farms and residences on the south bank while a plan to change land use and retreat from the Waiho flats is developed and implemented, and in the case of the Havill’s Wall extension, farms and the Franz Josef Wastewater Treatment Plant on the north bank.
Collaboration
The work is co-funded by West Coast Regional Council and central government through Kānoa’s Regional Infrastructure Fund.
